North Bandai and Bandai Hills.

Ashanti Region, Ghana. A bamboo public-private partnership on land degraded by fire and charcoal harvesting.

The project regenerates 11,145 hectares of land degraded by fire and illegal charcoal harvesting, delivered as a public-private partnership with the Government of Ghana, supporting the socioeconomic development of 13 communities located within 5 km of our project. Bamboo has been planted, integrated with native trees and remnant forest, and the project funds rain-harvesting and sanitation systems for the surrounding communities, where women make up 37% of the field workforce at North Bandai and 39% at Bandai Hills. Two adjacent registered projects, North Bandai and Bandai Hills, are managed as a single restoration landscape. North Bandai (VCS 2928) carries CCB; Bandai Hills (VCS 2929) is quantified and verified under Verra’s Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta).

Two adjacent registered projects, North Bandai and Bandai Hills, managed as a single restoration landscape. Fully committed.

This project’s allocation is fully committed, so no volume from it is available for offtake. There is scope to expand restoration in this region, and we are glad to talk to anyone interested in building on what is already running in Ghana.

Forest reserve land, stripped by fire and charcoal.

This is degraded forest reserve land, stripped by repeated fire and illegal charcoal harvesting until it stopped regenerating on its own. The partnership restores it within two forest reserves in the Ashanti Region, planting clumping bamboo integrated with native trees rather than as a monoculture, and holds the result under a long-term public-private agreement.

Two projects, one landscape

North Bandai and Bandai Hills are separately registered under the Verified Carbon Standard but sit adjacent to one another and are managed as one restoration landscape, which is why they are reported together.

Women in the field workforce

Women make up 37% of the field workforce at North Bandai and 39% at Bandai Hills. The project also funds rain-harvesting and sanitation systems for the communities around it.
